About seven months ago I moved from my longtime home of Tulsa, Oklahoma to Denver, Colorado. More specifically, I moved to a place called Highlands Ranch, a suburb of Denver. On the exterior I think most people would describe it as nice, maybe even pleasant. There are lots of shopping centers, access to grocery stores, walking trails and with the help of a few highways I can go to concerts downtown or head to the mountains for some nice scenery. How I came to live in this suburban environment was through a choice I made to be with my girlfriend who had moved here last August to go to school. She moved to this area to satisfy some very practical considerations. She was looking to live somewhere affordable that wasn't a total dump and her parents wanted her to live somewhere that seemed safe. But I'm not a big fan of the suburbs, in particular I'm not all that thrilled to be surrounded by your typical upscale suburban types. I have a hard time understanding people that seem to not only desire, but relish, an environment that I consider quite stale and boring. I have a hard time understanding people that are driven by what I see as a combination of fear and materialism. I have lots of questions for which I have only the beginnings of answers. My basic assumption, that people are mostly rational about the choices they make in their lives, leads me to believe that there are good valid answers my questions of why and how. |
