If you've come here looking for up to date campaign coverage, sorry, I've been hanging out with Dad yelling at the TV, what fun. My highlights of the day: Co-worker: "You gotta give president Bush props for sticking to what he says" On the tip of my tongue? "Compassionate Conservatism" and "Uniter not Divider" "smaller government" and "fiscal responsibility". Co-worker: "The reason oil is so high is because Clinton used up all our oil reserves and we're building them back up." Me: "ok" Karen Hughes: (I paraphrase of course) "President Bush is concerned about the division in this country" Me: "He should tell Karl Rove who has been pushing wedge issues for four years." Tucker Carlson: (roughly, on his PBS ad) "You can tell a person is lying if they can't state their case clearly. If you can't declare what you believe then you are lying." Me : "Funny, I've come to just the opposite conclusion." If the Democrats loose Florida by an even greater margin this year, will they stop blaming Nader for 2000? Not likely. The two places hit by the actual 9-11 attacks going overwhelmingly for Kerry, and the urban areas most likely to get hit by another terrorist attack voting for Kerry. The sparsely populated middle section, the safest places in the country voting for Bush because of the "war on terror". The media storyline. Favorite TV moment? Wolf Blitzer describing a scene in Iraq where he confidently states that "here are troops in Iraq watching the election" while the scene shows a TV, that is clearly not turned on. A complete lack of coverage of actual voters and people, an almost bizarre fascination the media talking heads have with their own voices and their fancy computer graphics. Fox and NBC showing their hands by calling Ohio earlier than the AP. Cable news making declarative statements that they are "being more careful this year" while still itching to call states and build a narrative. (You see, nobody wants to watch a bunch of people sitting around going "wait and see" and "we don't know".) A CNN map of the US that enlarged the middle section and diminished the size of the coastal states. Hey thanks. A CNN statistic that persisted to show Ralph Nader at 1% with ~140,000 votes while the total vote count was nearly 70 million votes. You do the math. Pundits making declarative statements only to make a declarative statement to the contrary just moments later. ABC news showing that it is probably the last major network with at least a tenuous commitment to actual objectivity. The same GOP operatives who stated that Dean was "too crazy" stating that Kerry was "not exciting enough" . Nice.. thanks guys. An overabundance of GOP voices compared to Democratic voices on cable news programs. All making declarative statements about Bush and Kerry. Interesting observations: "Wow, the exit polls were waaaaaay off, how strange.. hey look GAY MARRIAGE!!!" -- "What voting problems, everything went great, not like last time, we do good... good media... happy people, no problems, we'll not act like idiots like we did last time?" What fun, I'll make other observations tomorrow. Lot's of declarative statements... so you'll know I'm telling the truth. (wink) |
