This blog used to be about politics. Not so much anymore as I have worked through my fascination with that subject. It now seems appropriate that with a new president and the end of the Bush nightmare that I move on to new subjects that are more in line with my current interests. I may still occasionally express an opinion about political matters but for the most part I will be commenting on music, photography and personal observations. Thank you for reading.

ArabNews: US Is Frightening the World

"... the death of a small number of people from anthrax or 10 people at the hand of a gunman are events that could occur anywhere in the world without raising much of an uproar. If they happen in the US, they are front-page news and daily concerns for every citizen.

This again reaffirms my point that the US is spearheading a destructive and costly war against terrorism because it is afraid. But fear on the part of a superpower is a dangerous weapon that can backfire. And on top of the fear, there are other considerations."

-----

A view from another part of the world. It is growing clearer to me that there is a deep schizm between the perception we have of ourselves and the perception that others have of us. I hear people often talking about how we should just stop helping people if they are not going to be grateful.

When we look in teh mirror we see a knight in shining armor that spreads Democracy and helps people all over the worlds.

When others look at us they see a self-serving society that is intent on securing wealth for themselves in whatever means avaliable. If that means threatening the Brazilian presidential elections with financial bribery, using our purse strings to affect people's abilty to determinine their own leaders; or shutting off aid to Yemen after they opposed the first Gulf War; or telling Turkey that their continued preferred status depends on them going against the wishes of the public to do the bidding of the U.S. government; or ignoring Isreal's violations of UN security council resolutions but insisting that Iraq's violation demands immediate and dreadful action or even changing the reasons for the invasion of Iraq as it serves our needs.

We have a perception of hypocrisy. This I think starts with the Jeckl and Hyde nature of our government. Every four years we have different leaders that may have very different goals. How do you know where America stands when it could change at any minute. Look at the changes from the Bush to Clinton years. Bush seems intent to distance himself from all things Clinton. He tears up treaties and cuts diplomatic ties, starts new policies and cancels others. Where Clinton was more prone to talking nice and shaking hands with everybody around the world. The Bush people like to point fingers and call names. Its a philisophical difference. Do you prefer the carrot or the stick as a means of manipulation?
