This blog used to be about politics. Not so much anymore as I have worked through my fascination with that subject. It now seems appropriate that with a new president and the end of the Bush nightmare that I move on to new subjects that are more in line with my current interests. I may still occasionally express an opinion about political matters but for the most part I will be commenting on music, photography and personal observations. Thank you for reading.

far right candidate

Earlier I was listening to an advisor for the Obama campaign, Axelrod.. and when asked if the introduction of Sarah Palin into the race changed anything he responded to the effect that the campaign would stay focused on the main contenders, McCain and Obama.

What he should have said was this:

McCain's pick of Sarah Palin as his running mate shows that he is having serious issues with the radical right wing branch of the Republican party. This is a desperate attempt by the McCain campaign to appeal to far right conservatives that believe in the same radical positions that Sarah Palin holds. Mainstream Americans should be concerned that the McCain campaign is bowing to the pressure of a small but very vocal minority in the Republican party.

Obama, and the democrats need to make it clear that mainstream America should be very very afraid of the Republican base. The far right would not even let McCain choose his own running mate. Do we really want a president whose party is run by such hardliners with such fringe opinions on many important matters?

the problem with republicans

So I'm watching the republican national convention because I missed the democratic convention by taking advantage of Denver's lock down to take a vacation.

...and it seems to me that the main problem that the republican's have this election year is that their usual strategy of running against the democrats seems odd when they are coming off eight years of a republican presidency. So as they rail against high gas prices and government spending they act as if this were somehow not the result of their own president's failings.

So, John McCain is not George W. Bush. He was the guy that wasn't good enough for them when they stood by and let Bush smear McCain. Read the nice article written by former campaign manager Richard H. Davis about how the Bush supporters used push polling in South Carolina to suggest that McCain's adopted daughter was an illegitimate black child.

Blame the liberals.

Listen to the speeches during the convention and you get the recurring theme that has been dominant in Republican politics for as long as I can remember; blame someone else, the liberals, the democrats, the media, the New York Times, the Washington establishment... etc.

They have simplistic solutions so they resort to blaming others and running on their core issue - lowing taxes for rich people.

For example.. many times during the speeches people chanted about drilling, as if drilling is the end all solution neglecting the fact that its oil companies, not government that has the biggest say over where oil is bought. The reason we get so much oil from overseas is because that is where the oil companies can get it for a better price. Domestic production was not cost effective so the oil companies turned to cheap middle east oil. So republicans, are you ready to override oil companies business decisions to force them to buy domestic oil? Are you going to subsidize domestic production? Are you going to address this issue beyond a simplistic slogan?

I didn't think so.

But then again.. you're not looking for answers. You're looking for an excuse.

Additionally, watching the convention you get the distinct impression that McCain is secondary to the process. I get the impression that the messages of the convention, the typical red meat of the party faithful, don't really apply to the candidate. McCain has always been more moderate than the core republican party but the convention trudges on as if Bush were running again...

Did we mention that McCain is a war hero and has a strong personal story?

They will smear, its what they do.

Fight the Smears

Barack Obama's campaign has launched a website to fight the smears that will come from the Republican shills.

Sadly, this kind of rebuttal strategy is a necessity when you are running as a Democrat against a Republican party devoid of new ideas. The Republican playbook has consisted of the same tired plays for as long as I can remember: empty promises of fiscal responsibility while dishing out government money to their cronies, blatant pandering to the religious right on issues of abortion and gays, and smears and lies from their legion of paid shills to attack the integrity of anyone running against their man.

While I think that McCain will have more integrity than Bush, who was a puppet from the beginning, there will no doubt be operatives on the Republican side who will attack Obama with all the vile and vitriol they have for Democrats, who they consider nearly subhuman.

Cloud Cult - New Band - Listen to them.

Cloud Cult @ the Larimer Lounge (both shows) : Reverb
Is it unfair that Cloud Cult is still headlining small rock clubs? To them, yes. They deserve more love and attention, more money, more people worshipping their ebullient songs that explode like fireworks amid the live show. Absolutely.

Best new band. Every so often i stumble across a new band that just strikes me as special. Its for this reason that i keep listening to as much new music as I can, because every so often there is something new that makes me wonder why everyone alive isn't talking about this band.

Wow.

Saw the show on saturday and i too wondered why there were not more people climbing through the doors to see this band. Amazing, considering all the crap that gets so much attention.

Even when you make money...

For Exxon Mobil, $10.9 Billion Profit Disappoints - New York Times
Exxon Mobil, the world’s largest publicly traded oil company, said Thursday that its first-quarter net income rose 17 percent, boosted by surging oil prices.

But even as it posted the second-most profitable quarter in its history, Exxon’s earnings managed to disappoint investors because of a drop in oil production. Shares were down more than 3 percent Thursday after the company missed earnings estimates by a dime a share

Stories like this are partly the reason that I now believe that the stock market, while an interesting idea and a unique way to drive investment into new ideas, is poison in the long term. Initially the value of a new business will raise as they pursue new ideas and aggressive growth. Eventually though the business will mature and no matter if that business is still making money the perceived value will drop.
