Sometimes the blogosphere just gets stupid. Lately, with all this talk about Jeff Gannon and Eason Jordon and the like, I just find it hard to care about any of it. I dislike the nature of the partisan "gotcha journalism", especially when it distracts us from greater issues. If there is a role for blogs as watchdogs, it should be as critics of power, not defenders, or apologists. If it all boils down to which firing squad fires faster and louder then blogging will lose much of its potential as a way to discuss and expose issues that are being overlooked in the mainstream press. Will blogs go the way of A.M radio? Nothing but a wasteland of paid hacks lying for the sake of partisan gain? I hope not. Maybe its already too late. |
