Touchy Feely IHT: Voting without paper trail creates security risk The new Diebold touch screen voting machines were used in today's Super Tuesday election. I wonder if they had to a install last minute software upgrade to allow the machine to count Democratic votes. The fact that these machines don't have any hard copy to verify the accuracy of the vote is either a huge design flaw or a deliberate oversight. If you think about it for two seconds you might realize that the system requirements for voting machines should include ease of use (check) and an alternate way for first the voter and second the election officials to verify the vote. Without both these requirements I think its safe to say that the system is deeply flawed. Without a paper record of every vote or some other way to verify voters' choices after the fact, these experts warn, elections may lose the public's trust. I feel that simply printing out a receipt is insufficient. The touch screen system should print out a record of the voters choices as indicated and then that record is read by a separate machine after the voter has a chance to look over the votes indicated. Oklahoma has a great system. The voter indicates their vote by drawing a black line next to the vote they want and then a optical scanner reads those votes. There is a record of the voters intent available should any problems occur. I hope Oklahoma doesn't feel compelled to go touch screen. | |
